What is KlimaNet?

The goal of the project "KlimaNet" is to provide the necessary know-how for the launch and execution of climate protection and energy saving projects in schools. These projects help students, teachers and janitors achieve an energy savings of 5 % through the conscious use of electricity and heat. The Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of the Environment commissioned IFEU to create an internet site. The content covers the following issues:

  • Basic information on climate protection, energy, energy saving and sustainability
  • Practical help for starting and executing energy saving projects such as implementation strategies, a virtual school tour, action proposals and the use of renewable energy sources
  • Materials on the topic in class, that can be downloaded and printed
  • Presentation of successful school examples, links to their homepages

Support was provided for education authorities for energy conservation projects, current information, schedules, key contacts in the Germany, further reading and links to information. Already active schools are particularly valuable examples.

This offer has been available since the beginning of 2001 on the internet and can be found at http://www.klimanet.baden-wuerttemberg.de.

The website was completely redesigned for the 2008/09 school year by modernizing the layout to match the website of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg. In 2009/10 KlimaNet was selected as an offical project of the UN "Decade of Education for Sustainable Development".

  • Contest page: The competitions that climate protection and energy saving schools can currently participate in
  • Financial support: Tips and help for financing energy saving projects and renewable energy. Funding, participation and sponsorship models
  • Help for janitors: Visualized technical information on heating, electricity and water, protocol templates, information about measuring equipment, tips for the cooperation of teachers, students and janitors in energy saving projects
  • Primary schools: teaching modules, action proposals, experiments and other materials about energy, prepared especially for primary schools
  • Waste, water and transport: basic information, action proposals and tips on teaching literature materials
  • Bonus and other incentive schemes for energy saving projects in schools. Help for education authorities in answering questions: What available incentive schemes are there? How to support energy conservation projects in schools? How can schools be motivated in the long term

KlimaNet for Kids

KlimaNet for kids was created by IFEU after being commissioned to do so by the Ministry of the Environment. The website is aimed at students ages 11-15. Simple examples show the links between climate change and energy usage. KlimaNet for kids also contains a lot of info, tips and instructions for experiments on how students can become active at school or at home.
