Environmentally Friendly Schools – Eco-audits in Schools

Summary

The eco-audit is a voluntary environmental protection instrument. In 1999 and 2000 the Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports reviewed whether it can be applied to schools as part of the model project "Environmentally Friendly Schools".

The positive results from the pilot project prompted the ministry to support more schools with the implementation of eco-audits and to create a new support program, "Environmentally Friendly Schools".

IFEU advised schools together with other institutions. Besides the efficient use of energy issues discussed include waste, transport, procurement, exterior design and the handling of hazardous materials. The primary goal is to establish environmental management in schools in order to anchor the issue of environmental protection.

Literature and additional information
