Environmental Awareness in Schools

	...from an early age on	In addition to implementing efficient technologies, another significant element of efficient energy use and climate control is environmental awareness. Here we are unfortunately able to observe that "You can't teach an old dog new tricks". Adults are often set in their ways, making it difficult to change. Young people, however, have the opportunity of learning the "correct" way right from the start before they get used to "false" behaviour and what children learn at school can play an important role. We are not, however, implying that an additional subject "environmental education" should be added to the curriculum. Hundreds of schools in Germany have shown that environmental awareness can be taught and experienced integrating it into a "normal" routine of everyday life.

	Energy Saving Projects at Schools	IFEU has been teaching environmental education at various schools for years now and has even developed concepts of action with the respective ministries. Our support measures range from an "energy tour" of the school building to consulting for a schools "environmental audit"- We also develop projects tailored to the various needs of schools together with school administrators and teachers. One of our main fields is to develop concepts and providing support for energy-saving projects at schools. A vital factor is seeing that the school profits from the saved energy costs. As there are problems involved in designing these incentive systems, we recommend introducing an educational bonus system, to promote and reward the work teachers are doing.
