Soil Conservation

It wasn’t until the end of the 1990s that soil achieved a status that is comparable to the resources air and water with regard to environmental protection policies. The Federal Soil Protection Act (BbodSchG) passed in 1998 is aimed at sustainably preserving the primary functions of soil or restoring them when necessary. This means that harmful changes to the soil are to be prevented and measures to protect soil quality are to be taken. Utilisation of the soil should not interfere with its natural functions.

Projects

Possible adverse impacts on soil quality mainly result from its agricultural use. This leads to nutrient and pollutant inputs. A complete loss as a natural habitat because of sealing for construction purposes is possible as well.

Soil as a natural resource and the risk assessment of nutrients and contaminant inputs and discharges are a vital topic at IFEU.
