| The term mobile machinery covers a wide range of emission sources, from small hand-held garden equipment to large diesel engines in agriculture and construction. These machines have in common that they are not operated on public roads and are therefore also summarised as the off-road or non-road sector. Mobile machinery have been neglected by emission inventories and emission legislation for a long time. Only in 1999 first emission limits have been introduced for mobile machinery, which are now being gradually tightened. In traffic, however, since an emission legislation exists already since 1970.
