Mobile Machinery

What are mobile machinery?

The term mobile machinery covers a wide range of emission sources, from small hand-held garden equipment to large diesel engines in agriculture and construction. These machines have in common that they are not operated on public roads and are therefore also summarised as the off-road or non-road sector. Mobile machinery have been neglected by emission inventories and emission legislation for a long time. Only in 1999 first emission limits have been introduced for mobile machinery, which are now being gradually tightened. In traffic, however, since an emission legislation exists already since 1970.

What is the environmental impact of mobile machinery?

Particularly the emission legislation at the European level (Euro-stages) has led to a significant decrease in emissions from cars and trucks. The emissions of mobile machinery, however, remained on a very high level due to the lack of regulation. Therefore mobile machinery in Germany now, despite their low share in total fuel consumption, have a relevant share of emissions. This is especially true for particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions, for which the associated air quality limits are exceeded in many cities in Germany. These emissions are caused mainly by large diesel engines in agriculture and construction.

TREMOD-MM – the emission model for mobile machinery

The growing contribution of mobile machinery on total emissions in Germany calls for a more accurate inventory. Therefore IFEU has developed the scenario based computer model TREMOD MM (Transport Emission Model - Mobile Machinery) on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA). With TREMOD-MM, the emissions of mobile sources can be calculated for the years 1980 - 2020 in high differentiation. It is based on extensive research on the stock and use of machinery as well as the emission factors used for the engines. The data base, methods and results have been discussed with experts from industry, research and government agencies. The model has been extensively updated in 2009.
