The Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) is a non-profit ecological research institute. It was founded in 1978 by scientists from the University of Heidelberg who intended it to be an independent center of excellence for environmental research.
Currently, IFEU has a staff of more than 70, mainly scientists in the fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, geography, and engineering.
The photo was taken in October 2008 on the occasion of our 30th year anniversary. At that time Dr. Ulrich Höpfner (on the front right side) was the executive director of IFEU. He co-founded the Institute and from 1978 to 2009 he belonged to the Executive Board until he retired at the end of 2011. Dr. Höpfner still works as a consultant for IFEU.

IFEU is assisting clients worldwide using our unique cooperative and flexible approach. About two thirds of the research projects and reports are commissioned by clients in the public sector (local, national and international government agencies) and about one third by commercial clients and non-governmental organizations. IFEU experts realized projects in Europe, USA, China, India, Indonesia, Latin America, Russia and the Marshall Islands.
The list of our clients includes the World Bank, the European Commission (project list), German Ministries on the Federal and State level, regional and local governments, national and international foundations, industry associations, companies (e.g. Daimler-Chrysler, BMW, Deutsche Telekom, Deutsche Shell, BASF) and environmental organizations (e.g. Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth).
Subject-specific lists of projects can be found here.
